Aikido for children? Yes! In Aikido, your child makes friends while improving movement, self-discipline, and cooperation.
Children learn the same basic aikido self-defense techniques as adults, but in kids class they have more fun. After all, they’re kids! They pair up and practice a technique, taking turns to “throw” (defend) and receive the throw (falling on the floor safely). Drills and games maintain interest and build skills. They also learn aspects of Japanese culture and language.
TESTING
As a martial art, the kids progress via testing through nine levels of colored belts up to children’s black belt. Our test requirements were developed by Okimura Shihan, Chair of World Aikido Aikikai. Inc (WAAI), the federation to which Aikido of Minnesota is enrolled, and has a direct link to Aikido headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
TEACHERS/CLASSES/AGE
Our teachers not only volunteer their time but pay monthly dues as well in support of the educational mission of our non-profit.
Cost: $35 /month via electronic funds transfer. Or $40 via cash or check. Your child may try a class at no charge.
Ages: 7 to 15.
PARTICULARS FOR PARENTS
Parents or legal guardians must sign a waiver for their child to participate, and it must be renewed every year. Parents are responsible for seeing their child safely to and from the dojo (practice hall). Parents are welcome to stay and observe classes. We encourage parents to review the etiquette with their child in the first month and, when applicable, testing requirements. We have pot luck parties with family after each testing award ceremony.
